Planting Design

From elegant, architectural planting to abundant, naturalistic borders, we create considered planting schemes that bring colour, texture and year-round interest to your garden.

Planting that brings your garden to life

Plants do so much more than fill a border. They soften architectural lines, create privacy, draw the eye through a garden and bring together all the elements that make an outdoor space feel complete.

At Bloomin' Marvellous, we look at the garden as a whole. The shape of the space, the quality of the light, the soil, the surrounding architecture and how you want to use your garden all help determine the right planting approach.

The result is a considered combination of trees, shrubs, perennials and grasses, chosen to work together rather than compete for attention. From the first flush of spring flowers to the structure and movement of late-season grasses, we can help create a garden that offers something to enjoy throughout the year.

What's your planting style?

Every garden is different, and there's no single formula for getting planting right. You might love the relaxed abundance of an English cottage garden, the clean lines of contemporary planting or the softer, more natural look of ornamental grasses and layered perennials.

Naturalistic & contemporary

Loose, flowing planting with a strong sense of movement. Ornamental grasses, airy perennials and contrasting foliage create a relaxed, modern feel, bringing softness and interest to patios, pathways and architectural gardens.

Romantic & cottage-inspired

Roses, generous flowering perennials and a lovely mix of colour and texture create a garden that feels abundant and full of life.

Architectural & evergreen

For a garden with year-round structure, we combine carefully shaped shrubs, evergreen planting and distinctive foliage.

trong forms and considered repetition create a confident, uncluttered look, with seasonal flowers adding interest where they work best.

Soft, layered & textural

Sometimes the magic is in the details: silvery leaves beside deep green foliage, rounded flower heads rising above low-growing plants, and fine grasses weaving between larger forms. A restrained palette of white, blush pink, mauve and purple can feel sophisticated without being formal.

Beautiful planting, thoughtfully brought together

A successful planting scheme is about more than choosing flowers you love. It's about understanding how plants behave, how they relate to one another and how the garden will develop over time.

We consider height, shape, leaf texture and flowering season to create depth and contrast. Taller plants can provide structure at the back of a border, while lower-growing plants soften the edges. Grasses introduce movement, evergreen shrubs give the garden a reliable framework, and seasonal flowers bring colour at just the right moments.

Light levels, soil conditions, drainage and available space matter too. Choosing plants that suit their surroundings gives them a better chance to establish and thrive, while helping the garden feel cohesive rather than overcrowded.

The aim is planting that looks beautiful together, and continues to work as it matures.

Plant now. Enjoy it next summer.

If you're dreaming of a garden filled with beautiful planting next summer, now is the time to start thinking about it.

A successful border takes planning. The plants need to suit the conditions, the combinations need to work together, and the layout needs room for everything to establish and grow. Starting the conversation early gives us time to consider the design, choose the right plants and plan the work around suitable planting conditions.

Autumn can be an excellent time to plant many hardy trees, shrubs and perennials, provided the soil and weather conditions are suitable. Over the cooler months, we can also plan the structure and combinations that will bring the garden to life when the growing season returns.

Whether you're looking to introduce colour to an existing border or completely rethink your garden's planting, we'll help you plan for the garden you want to enjoy, not just next summer, but for years to come.

Frequently asked patio & path questions...

Can you design a planting scheme for an existing garden?

Absolutely. We can help refresh tired borders, introduce new colour and texture, or rethink the planting throughout an established garden. We'll consider what is already working, the conditions in your garden and the look you're hoping to achieve.

What planting works best in a small garden?

The key is choosing plants that suit the scale of the space. A combination of carefully selected shrubs, vertical interest, seasonal flowers and contrasting foliage can create depth without overwhelming the garden. We can help you make the most of every border, corner and container.

Can you create a garden that looks good all year round?

Yes. With a thoughtful mix of evergreen structure, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and ornamental grasses, it's possible to create interest across the seasons. The balance will depend on your garden, the conditions and the style you prefer.

How do you choose the right plants for my garden?

We consider factors such as sunlight, shade, soil, drainage, available space and how much maintenance you'd like to take on. We then look at the colours, textures, heights and flowering periods that will work together to create your chosen look.

How much does garden planting cost?

The cost depends on the size of the area, the plants selected, the preparation required and the amount of planting involved. Once we understand your garden and what you'd like to achieve, we can discuss the scope of the work and provide a tailored quote.
